spring will come

“...the gospel is the one great permanent circumstance in which I live and move…” is a quote by Milton Vincent in his book, A Gospel Primer. When I think about changing seasons, it’s so grounding to know God’s character and promises stay the same.

Metaphors run through my head when I reflect on God’s creation. In this photo, Holcomb Gardens is covered in snow - a photo taken this week in Indianapolis. Just a few months back, the autumn leaves were at their peak. When thinking about the beauty of the color change…Why is it that we find beauty in dying leaves? We’re focused on the bright color we see and the refreshing fall air. Yet with the falling of the leaves come cold, dark winter days ahead.

With the falling snow comes a quiet, cold winter day. I see the pure white snow here as a gentle blanket in the midst of the barren cold trees.

We all know spring will come.

Here in Birmingham, I see the pink buds on our saucer magnolia beginning to bloom. It happens this week every year.

This last week we celebrated the fourth birthday of our daughter who once stood on the threshold of life and death. God kept her here and we praise Him daily for that gift. And in the same breath we grieve with the families who walk with heartache missing the life they thought they’d have with their child. I’ll tell you what I know - I know our Heavenly Father is the blanket of comfort in the midst of cold dark seasons, He’s also the vibrant color of hope we can look upon in the face of death. He also gives us the hope that this world is not our final home - so in this life, I long to live for Him.

Winter feels different when you remember the hope of what’s to come.

Wherever we are, may we seek His face today.
